Week 1: Learning the Market

I recently started selling at local markets—and I just wrapped up my second one. While the weather was cold and foot traffic was light, I quickly realized this was actually the perfect time to begin.

With fewer people out, I could focus on learning the rhythm of a market day: setting up my tent efficiently, arranging my table, and paying attention to what people stopped to look at. These quieter markets have become my practice ground—low pressure, but full of valuable lessons.

For my very first market, I had just three weeks to prepare. At the beginning of week one, I had zero inventory. No kits. Nothing boxed. Just an idea. Over those three weeks, I figured out how to create and prep my DIY paint kits from start to finish, eventually getting about 20 kits ready to sell. I also gathered the shirts I already sell on Etsy and added stickers to the mix so I could offer a variety of price points.

My main goal, though, was clear: I want DIY paint kits to be the heart of what I sell.

At that first market, I sold three paint kits—to one woman. At my second market, I sold three again, but this time to three different people. Considering it was freezing cold and there were hardly any shoppers, I was genuinely happy with those results.

Honestly, I wasn’t surprised they sold. I knew that if I walked past my own booth, I’d want to buy one. Paint parties are everywhere right now, and people love paint-and-sip experiences. These kits fit right into that world—creative, approachable, and fun.

Beyond the sales, there’s something really special about this season. I get to spend market days alongside my husband, building something new together. It feels like the beginning of something exciting—learning as I go, growing little by little, and stepping into a new chapter with confidence.

Cold weather and all, I’m grateful I started.
